Shower Waterproofing
Shower Waterproofing Membranes, Sealants & Sealing Bands
Shower waterproofing is the most critical step in any tile shower installation. Trugard Direct carries a full range of professional-grade waterproofing products—including polyethylene sheet membranes, steam shower membranes, sealing bands, inside and outside corners, pipe seals, and waterproof sealant—that create a continuous moisture barrier behind your tile.
Our waterproofing membrane is a direct, high-performance alternative to the Schluter Kerdi membrane at over 60% savings. It bonds directly to standard substrates like cement board, plywood, and drywall using unmodified thin-set mortar, and tile can be installed right over it. No waiting for coats to dry, no messy liquid-applied systems.
For steam shower applications, we offer a vapor-tight membrane rated for continuous steam exposure. Pair it with our steam shower collection for a fully sealed steam enclosure.
- Sheet membrane in multiple widths for walls, floors, and ceilings
- Pre-formed corners and sealing bands for fast, reliable seam coverage
- Compatible with all standard thin-set tile installations
- Exceeds ANSI/IAPMO standards for waterproofing
Pair your membrane with a Trugard drain and shower tray for a complete, leak-free system.
Shower Waterproofing FAQs
Shower waterproofing membrane is a thin, flexible sheet made from high-density polyethylene (HDPE) that bonds directly to your shower substrate using thin-set mortar. It creates a continuous waterproof barrier behind your tile that prevents moisture from reaching the studs, subfloor, and framing. Without a proper membrane, water seeps through grout joints over time and causes mold, wood rot, and structural damage that can cost thousands to repair.
Measure the height and width of each shower wall, then add the floor area. Multiply wall height by width for each wall, sum everything together, and add 10% extra for overlaps at seams and corners. Trugard membrane comes in rolls sized by square footage, so match your total to the nearest roll size. For a standard 3x5-foot shower with 8-foot ceilings, you typically need around 130-150 square feet of membrane.
Trugard HDPE waterproofing membrane is fully compatible with standard thin-set mortars, cement board, foam board substrates, and most tile adhesive systems. It works alongside other brand components like Schluter drains, Laticrete adhesives, and Wedi boards. That said, using a complete Trugard system (membrane, seam tape, pipe boots, and sealant) ensures every component is tested together and gives you the strongest warranty coverage.
Standard shower membrane waterproofs against liquid water that penetrates through tile and grout. Steam shower membrane adds a vapor barrier layer that blocks moisture in its gaseous form, which is critical because steam penetrates materials that liquid water cannot. If you're building a steam shower, you need vapor-rated membrane on all walls and the ceiling to prevent condensation inside your wall cavities. Trugard offers both options, clearly labeled on each product page.
